Water‐Soluble (Poly)acylhydrazones: Syntheses and Applications

Acylhydrazone-based (macro)molecules display an increasingly broad spectrum of applications, from small therapeutic molecules and metal-ions probes to self-healing films biorelevant dynamic polymers. The acylhydrazone function is indeed prime interest since its unique design combines hydrogen bonds, pH-dependent reversibility, ability undergo molecular exchanges, a possible polyvalency. However, key parameter use in aqueous media the associated water-solubility resulting (macro)molecule. This property can become limitation for applications requiring high concentrations or no organic cosolvent. review first focuses on describing function, properties, relevancy combinatorial chemistry. Then it details synthesis strategies (molecular design, cosolvent, reaction conditions) reported literature ensure sufficient solubilization both single-bond multiple-bond (macro)molecules, together with their various applications.
